During a workshop with Indra, we developed a project aimed at promoting recycling in Spain. This initiative was a collaborative effort between Mercadona and Ecoembes.

Marisol

"I try to consume less plastic, but now even fruits and vegetables in supermarkets come in plastic packaging.

I’d like to do more, but I don’t know how.”

Juan

“There are people who have told me that I have to remove the labels from the containers to recycle properly. I don’t know if that’s true, and I don’t really know how to recycle. I recycle to have a clearer conscience about the environment, although honestly, I’m not sure if I’m doing it right or not.”

Mathias

“Why recycle? In the end, all the garbage that’s recycled ends up in the same bin. I just don’t see the point.”

Process

Problematic

In Spain, people generate an average of 1.2 kilograms of waste per day. While many individuals attempt to recycle, a significant number lack knowledge on how to do it correctly. Others, not seeing tangible results, simply they don´t find a motivation to do it.

Solution

A product designed to teach recycling while incentivizing users with tangible benefits.

Every time a user shops at Mercadona supermarket, their receipt will highlight the recyclable products they purchased, along with an estimated amount they could earn by recycling those items. Recycling stations will be conveniently located within the supermarket, allowing users to return empty containers and accumulate monetary rewards.

Context:
Germany has implemented a highly efficient recycling system for glass bottles called the Pfandsystem. This system provides economic benefits to users who return their bottles, serving as a successful model of incentivized recycling.

Impact

  • Increase recycling rates.

  • Reduction of waste.

  • Encouragement of Responsible Consumption.

  • Improved environmental awareness.
